half term sports week
Two sporting celebrities visited Oadby as part of Sport England’s ‘Sporting Champions’ initiative. Andy Sinton, former Tottenham Hotspurs and Wolves FC player and Lisa Dobriskey, current Commonwealth Games 1500 athletics Champion were invited by Oadby & Wigston Borough Council to attend the 2007 October half term multi-sports week.
Working in partnership with Beauchamp College, children aged 8 to 14 years were able to participate in a variety of activities in the sports hall at Beauchamp College. Sports included athletics, badminton, basketball, Boccia, cricket, danish long ball, football, rounders, new age Kurling and fun team games.
Andy and Lisa provided a coaching session, demonstration and a question and answer session with the aim of inspiring and motivating youngsters to keep active and join one of the many local sports clubs in the borough.
Students from Beauchamp College also benefited from the programme. Working in partnership with ‘Voluntary Action for Oadby & Wigston’ student volunteers were recruited to assist the lead coaches with the activities. They gained valuable experience of working with young people in a sporting environment.
A sports tournament took place on the final day of the programme. The Mayor of Oadby & Wigston, Councillor Jeffrey Kaufman, presented certificates to all the participants and medals and prizes to the winning teams.
