Avril Lennox (Leisure Development Officer)

Avril Lennox  Leisure Development Officer

My name is Avril Lennox and I am the Leisure Development Officer for Oadby and Wigston Borough Council. My role is to promote the development of sport and leisure initiatives and opportunities within the borough.

I bring to this post a life long interest in sport spanning 25 years at both national and international levels in Olympic Gymnastics. I represented Great Britain in 2 Olympic Games, 1 World Championships and 3 European Games. I became the first British Gymnast to qualify for the Olympic Games All-Around Finals and was British Gymnastics Champion for four consecutive years. After my competitive career I was awarded the MBE by the Queen for my contribution to sport. I then began coaching gymnastics and travelled to Russia, America and Romania to develop my coaching techniques before establishing my gymnastics club in Leicester. I then went on to represent Great Britain as coach to the British Team.

As Leisure Development Officer I work closely with schools, clubs and organisations to enable the development of leisure and sports initiatives. I also work in partnership to create closer links between schools and clubs to provide accessible pathways to sporting excellence for our most talented sports people, as well as working with adults of all ages to investigate their leisure needs.

I have recently updated the borough's Sports Club Directory. The directory provides information on the range of clubs and sports organisations which operate in the borough, so individuals of all ages can access activities. If you would like a copy of the Sports Club Directory please contact me on Leicester (0116) 2572 673 or by email.  |Alternatively you may wish to download the information here|.
