Local children were encouraged to get active during the summer holidays by taking part in our Summer Sports Activity Programme.

Working in partnership with the Local Sport Alliance, a variety of sports activities were on offer across four parks in the borough; Uplands Park and Coombe Park in Oadby, Willow Park in Wigston, and Blaby Road Park in South Wigston. Sports activities included athletics, basketball, cricket, football, rugby, rounders, tennis and fun team relay games, for children aged 8 to 14 years. All participants received information and contact details on local sports clubs in order to encourage continued participation in their chosen sport.

Activities for young people with special needs were also organised.  Children and young people participated in a variety of sports activities at Coombe Park in Oadby for two weeks during August.

Student volunteers from Beauchamp and Guthlaxton College contributed to the programme by assisting the lead coaches. They gained valuable experience of working with young people in a sporting environment.

Over 165 children took part in the four week sports scheme. Participants were invited to take part in the Oadby and Wigston Sports Tournament finale, held on 16th August at Coombe Park in Oadby and Willow Park in Wigston. The Oadby and Wigston Mayor, Councillor Jeffrey Kaufman attended the event and presented medals to the winning teams and certificates to all participants.

Feedback from children and parents overwhelmingly demonstrated the enjoyment and success of the activity programme, with the highlight being the sports tournament where team members cheered one another on throughout the event.
