Environmental Wardens Volunteer Group

Summary

This page provides information on the Environmental Wardens Volunteer Group, what they do and how we support them.

Who are Environmental Wardens?

Environmental wardens are a group of volunteers who take responsibility for looking after an area of the borough of a size and location suitable for them. This could be as small as the pavement of the street in front of their house or as large as an open space or a row of shops, or even the roads near a school.

They undertake:-

  1. litter picking
  2. reporting dog fouling, graffiti, untidy sites, incidents of anti social behaviour, needles, drug paraphernalia, signs of alcohol use (bottles and cans)
  3. setting an example to young people
  4. raising awareness of the cleaner, greener environments in their neighbourhoods.

We support them by providing:-

  1. highly visible jackets with an Environmental Warden Volunteer Logo
  2. gloves
  3. picker
  4. bag rings
  5. bags
  6. an identification badge
  7. contact numbers for reporting incidents. For example the litterline, out of hours emergency number, contact names and telephone numbers.
  8. organising and providing venues for the group.

The EWVG (Environmental Wardens Volunteer Group) are working towards becoming a constituted community group that could apply for external funding. Officers would service the group and give talks and presentations, listen and inform ideas to encourage the group formation.  This will be done by:-

  1. newsletters
  2. feedback on progress on issues that the wardens bring forward – showing them that they are making a difference.
  3. making the group a driving force in the Clean Britain Awards and affiliating to Pride of the Borough.
  4. encouraging the group to form links with other community groups. For example Friends of Parks and with schools to get joint litter picking ventures going.
