Waste and recycling have recently been at the forefront of Recycling Champions Dorset Avethe media.  It has received national news coverage from the Leicester Mercury to the BBC, all reporting on recycling.  Not surprisingly recycling now plays a paramount role in our everyday lives, however, there are many areas in England where recycling has only just been introduced.   Fortunately, here in Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston we have been recycling for over a decade.  It started with the odd recycling site dotted around the Borough but has now grown to an extensive kerbside collection scheme where residents can recycle most of their waste.
To find out just how well the streets were doing, the Council decided to run a competition to find the best recycling streets in Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston.  Following the online nominations by residents living in the Borough, streets were judged against the amount of recycling versus the amount of refuse placed outside for collection and also on the percentage of houses that recycle.

The winners Recycling Champions Oxted Rise

The winning streets are Oxted Rise whose recycling participation and collection rate was 89%,

Dorset Avenue was 88% and West Avenue was 73%.

To celebrate their success, the Mayor of Oadby and Wigston unveiled the recycling street signs that will remain at the sites for a period of one year.

Congratulations to all of the residents living on the winning streets and also to all those who continue to recycle and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
