Oadby and Wigston residents say no to waste

For the second consecutive year the Borough of Oadby and Wigston have been in the top 10 Councils for its low household waste arising per head of population.

According to the 2007/08 statistics provided by the Department of food and rural affairs, the Borough sent 10,335 tonnes of residual waste to landfill, which equates to 182 kilograms per head of population. The figure is even better when compared to the previous year when it sent 196 kilograms per head of population of residual household waste to landfill.  Resource Magazine - January 2009, ranked the Borough 8 out of 269 in the country, making it number 1 in Leicestershire.

While the amount of waste going to landfill is gradually decreasing, the recycling and garden waste services have seen a steady increase in the amount of waste sent for reprocessing.  Since the introduction of a fortnightly garden waste service and a weekly kerbside recycling scheme in 2002, more and more residents have started using the service thereby diverting thousands of tonnes of recyclable and compostable waste from landfill.

Last year over 43 percent of household waste was recycled and composted, up by 3 percent from the previous year. This year the Council aims to collect and send more than 45 percent of household waste for recycling and composting.

Councillor Bill Boulter said, "This is fantastic news and shows how committed residents of the borough are to recycling and protecting their environment. We shall do our best to help residents do even better in 2009. Not only are we unaffected by problems in disposing of recyclate we shall also be trialling new door to door recycling services in March. With 90% of the people living in the borough being satisfied with the waste services we provide, I believe the participation in the trial services will be high and lead to even better performance next year."
