Summary
This pages gives details about what is hazardous waste and how to dispose it.
What is hazardous waste?
Hazardous waste is waste that contains materials which can be harmful to human health or the environment. This basically means that hazardous waste cannot be disposed with regular household waste due to it's detrimental effects on both the environment and on human health.
The most common types of hazardous waste arising from the household are car batteries, engine oil, asbestos, clinical waste, fridges, freezers, cookers, washing machines and dryers. To avoid problems, all of these items must be disposed in a safe and separate manner.
How to dispose them?
Under the bulky waste collection| service we operate a special collection service for most items that are classified as hazardous household waste. Please view the bulky waste collection page for details on what is collected and the charges for the collection.
Items such as flourescent lights and low energy light bulbs can also be taken to the recycling and household waste centre| located on Wigston road, Oadby.
