TetraPak Recycling

This page provides information on the new carton recycling scheme that is now available at recycling sites in the borough.  It lists the recycling sites where the scheme is available.

Carton recycling now available in the borough

cartons

Good news, you can now recycle your paper-based drinks and liquid food cartons, such as those made by Tetra Pak, at various points within the borough.  Carton collection banks can be found at:

• The Pavilion Horsewell Lane, Wigston
• Sainsburys Car Park, Oadby

• Parklands Leisure Centre Car Park, Oadby

Please note, the bank at the Pavilion Horsewell Lane has been removed due to vandalism.  Please use one of the other banks until further notice.  We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The following types of carton are recyclable:

Fruit juice cartons

Milk cartons and

Soup cartons

Most cartons have the word Tetra Pak printed on them. If you see this word on the carton, it means you can recycle it at one of the above recycling sites.

Each year, the UK beverage carton manufacturers produce 55,000 tonnes of paper-based cartons for milk, juice, sauces and other liquid food/drinks.  This equates to around 2.3kg of cartons per household which could be recycled instead of thrown in the rubbish bin.

In response,  we are working with Tetra Pak and the carton industry body ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment) to establish carton collection points at key recycling points for residents to take their empty cartons to be recycled.

Once collected, the cartons can be taken away to be baled, transported to a recycling mill. They can be recycled into a number of different products, ranging from plasterboard liner to high-strength paper bags and envelopes.
