Abandoned Vehicles - Information

We can deal with vehicles that are genuinely abandoned by their owners who have no intention to collect them.

If you know of such a vehicle and you tell us about it, we will first try to confirm that it is genuinely abandoned.

We will then make every effort to find out who is responsible for leaving the vehicle and make them responsible for collecting it. This is to prevent local residents paying for the cost of removal through your council tax.

However it can mean that the vehicle remains where it is for a number of days while we contact the registered keeper and instruct him/her to move it.

Although it can take up to 31 days to remove a vehicle, it usually happens in a much shorter time. If we think the vehicle is in such a condition or location as to pose a real threat to vandalism, we will have it moved very quickly (exact time depends on circumstances).

If you report a case to us, we will keep you informed of progress if you would like us to - just leave us your contact details.

So - if you know of a vehicle you think may be abandoned and you would like us to investigate it, send us the details on the report an abandonded vehicle |page

What we cannot deal with

We do not have the power to deal with a vehicle that is in current use but has been parked illegally or on the highway causing an obstruction.

This is a matter for the Police and than can be contacted on Leicester 0116 222 2222.

Also we cannot deal with a vehicle being used without current road tax.  This should be reported to the Police or directly to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency|.
