Air Quality

The Environment Act 1995 gives all local authorities the duty to assess the air quality within their area and to predict the future air quality against targets set by the National Air Quality Strategy.

This page gives information about the work we are contributing to the National Strategy.

Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs)

In 2001 we declared 4 AQMAs in Oadby and Wigston as a result of evidence that the target level for nitrogen dioxide would be exceeded.

Since then, we have been monitoring the actual levels of nitrogen dioxide in these areas.

The results for 2003, 2004 and 2005 show that the target level for nitrogen dioxide has been met. Therefore, it is appropriate that we now consider revoking our AQMAs.

We are also proposing to take no action with regard to the other potential pollutants that are referred to in the National Air Quality Strategy.
