What happens if we owe rent arrears or other debts to the Council or another landlord or building society?
If you or any member of your household has former tenant arrears or owes any other debt to us or another landlord, you will be deducted points effectively deferring your application. Once the arrears are clear the 'minus' points will be removed.
You will need to enter into an agreement to clear all of the outstanding housing debt owed by any of the persons on the application form.

What happens if we have been evicted from a previous tenancy for anti- social behaviour?
We have the option of either excluding you from the housing register or deducting points from your application. This applies regardless of your previous landlord and location of your previous home. This applies to all persons who would form part of your normal household.
If you are verbally abusive or violent towards a member of staff, either on our premises, during a home visit or other situations, which relate to your housing application or tenancy, the same option of either excluding you from the housing register or deducting points will be considered.
Depending upon the severity of the abuse or violence you may be prevented from coming into our offices, speaking to officers on the telephone or from having a housing officer visit you at home to discuss your application. You will be advised on any progress concerning your application on the housing register via a letter or through a third party such as the Citizens Advice Bureau or Shelter.
The Head of Housing Services will contact you in writing to advise you why this decision has been made. You have the right to appeal against this decision through the Authority’s complaint procedure.
Each application will be looked at on its merits.
