The following section provides some brief answers to some of the frequently asked questions relating the Electoral Services.

Please click on the following link 'Electoral Registration' for more in-depth information about the Register of Electors which includes guidance on who is eligible to register; the process of how you can register as an elector to vote and how you may inspect the register.

What is the Electoral Register?

An electoral register is compiled following a canvass of all properties occupied on the 15 October each year.  The register is used to enable residents to vote at any elections, polls or referenda which might be held during the year. Canvass forms are delivered to every household at the end of August. It is also possible to change your details if you move house during the year.  This can be done by completing an application form to be registered as an elector.

The Electoral Services Officer makes and keeps two versions of the electoral register - the full register and the edited register.  If you wish for your name and address to be excluded from the edited register, then you need to indicate on your application form or alternatively write to the Electoral Services Officer.

What is the Electoral Register Used For?

The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote.  Only certain people and organisations can have copies of the full register, and they can only use it for specified purposes. These include electoral purposes, the prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when you have applied for credit.

Who can see the Electoral Register?

The Representation of the People (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2002 indicates who can have a copy of the full register and for what purpose they can use it.  It is a criminal offence for them to pass it on to anyone else or to use it for any other purpose.

The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of those who have requested that their names be excluded from this version of the register.  The edited register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purpose.

What if I Move House?

If you have recently moved house or your name does not appear on the Register of Electors then please complete the 'Application to be Registered As An Elector' form and send by post to the Electoral Services Officer for processing.

(a separate form needs to be completed for each person who wishes to be registered).
