What is a conservation area?
There are a number of areas within the Borough which have been formally designated as conservation areas. These are areas which are considered to have special architectural or historic interest which is desirable to preserve and enhance.
The legislation on conservation areas is contained in the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. The act defines a conservation area as an 'area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve and enhance.'
Designation of conservation areas
The Planning (Listed and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 allows conservation areas to be designated to preserve and enhance the character of such areas. Once designated, consent generally is required before a building or other structure can be demolished
Conservation area appraisals
Conservation area appraisals| fulfil the duty to 'draw up and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement' of the conservation area as required by the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
