PRESS RELEASE
Council Leader pledges that dark age over Eco Town is now at an end
John Boyce, Leader of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, has sent a strong and clear message to the Government now that the secrecy surrounding the selection of the Co-op’s plans for a 12,000 – 15,000 Eco Town on the North East outskirts of Oadby has come to an end with yesterday’s announcement.
"So far we have all been kept totally in the dark by the Government. It is outrageous that this Government has secretly selected 15 potential new eco towns out of over 50 from behind closed doors. It has arrogantly said from the start that it would not listen to the views of local people, whatever they were, and sadly it has been totally true to its word"
He has pledged to make sure that all the information is now published by the Government and Co-op so that residents and businesses in the Borough are able to raise questions, listen to the answers and then make a proper decision. Oadby and Wigston Borough Council is committed to make the Government acknowledge the views of residents and preferably to listen.
"Now Pennbury has been short listed we will make sure the Government listens to the views of local people. We are now sitting down with the Government, the Co-op and hopefully the other local authorities affected, to agree exactly how we are going to make sure that the people of Leicestershire, particularly Oadby and Wigston, are given all the facts. We will use our influence to ensure the Co-op connects with local people and listen to their views. We expect the Co-op to provide the answers to the legitimate concerns of residents and businesses. Everybody will then be able to fully understand exactly what is being proposed so that they can then make their own minds up".
"We will also make sure that the Government is absolutely clear with us when the right time is to feed these views in so they will have the most impact on the final decision".
