At last nights special meeting of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council (Tuesday 24th June) a clear and unanimous message was sent to the government that due to the lack of information from the co-op their eco-town proposal is unsustainable and unsupportable.
Over the last six weeks the council has consulted every individual household and business in the borough.
John Boyce leader of the council stated, "At the start of this I promised to provide everybody with as much information as we could. We have done exactly that by finding out what our residents wanted to know. We then got the answers from the co-op and the government and published them. We also held public meetings attended by hundreds of residents, the co-op and government."
He went on to say, "Of the 4000 residents that responded, 3380 said NO based on the information they had seen and heard. They have also raised another 3500 questions that we will now analyse, summarise and demand that the co-op and government answer, if the eco-town stays on the shortlist after July."
John Boyce said, "The overwhelming message in the council chamber and from residents is that there is simply not enough information and everybody is being asked to make a giant leap of faith with nothing to base it on."
"We have consulted everybody democratically based on the evidence available so far and our answer is no. We will now lobby the Co-op and government with this loud and clear message from our borough."
