Academy pupils raise money for Mayor's charity

Pupils from Wigston Academy raised well over a thousand pounds and donated half towards former Mayor of Oadby and Wigston, Cllr Robert Eaton's chosen charity - Mablethorpe based Leicestershire Children’s Holiday Centre.

As part of their Red Nose day activities staff and pupils at Wigston Academy decided to raise funds towards the Mayor's chosen charity after hearing about its work following a visit by many of the pupils to the nearby Council Offices earlier this year.

The pupils were invited to the Council's headquarters to ask Councillors a variety of questions to understand more about what the Council does and how local democracy works. After discussions with Cllr Robert Eaton, the Mayor at the time, the Executive Head of Wigston Academy, Mr Mark Mitchley put the idea forward and it was agreed that half the proceeds from a dress-down day would go to the Mayor's charity.

Cllr Robert Eaton (who was replaced as Mayor by Cllr Samia Haq in May) visited a packed assembly (Friday 16 June) to receive the cheque for £547 on behalf of his chosen charity. Cllr Eaton went on to talk through the great work the charity does for local children and how he himself benefitted from its work when he was younger.

Headteacher Ms. Anne Miller who presented Cllr Eaton with the cheque said: "It was great that our pupils could get involved and support this charity and that the former Mayor was able to talk about the work the charity does at our assembly today. It was especially pleasing that they could see first-hand how the money they raised gets put to good use in a very real and personal way."

The Academy pupils raised an impressive £1,094 in total and donated the other half to Comic Relief.
