Grounds Maintenance

This page gives information on the grounds maintenance service and the number of parks, open spaces and recreational facilities in the borough.

Our grounds maintenance team are responsible for maintaining what we think of as some of the most valuable assets in the borough.

Our parks and open spaces include:-

  • twelve parks including sports grounds and numerous open spaces. Together these comprise of 482,000 square metres of grass, nearly 7,000 square metres of shrub beds, hundreds of trees and seasonal bedding displays.
  • two cemeteries, including carrying out interments and three closed church yards.
  • three allotments.
  • three Spinneys, known as wooded areas, in Oadby. A woodland walk in South Wigston.
  • communal housing areas which includes over 45,000 square metres of grass and 3,000 square metres of shrubs and trees.
  • Oadby golf course.

Since 2003 we have not been responsible for maintaining the highway verges. This work is carried out by Leicestershire County Council.

A number of recreational facilities are also maintained by us including:-

  • sixteen play areas.
  • two skateboard/BMX areas
  • three bowls greens
  • seven tennis courts
  • two multi-sport courts which incorporates tennis courts
  • two cricket squares
  • fifteen football pitches

To carry this out we have a range of equipment including:-

  • specialised golf machinery
  • bowls green mowers and blowers
  • compact tractor for grave digging
  • ride on triple mowers and strimmers
  • compact tractor and mower
  • pedestrian mowers, vans, pick ups
  • chain saws and a full range of protective and safety equipment

We also work in conjunction with the Countryside and Biodiversity Officer, Friends groups and Pride of the Borough.
