Housing applications - council tenants wanting to downsize

This page contains information on an incentive scheme that Oadby and Wigston Borough Council have available for council tenants.

Oadby and Wigston Borough Council secure tenants are eligible for an incentive to move scheme if they currently under-occupy one of our family sized properties and wish to move to smaller accommodation in the Borough which is designated for older people.

In order to qualify for the incentive scheme you will need to be aged 60 or over and living in Oadby and Wigston Borough Council family sized accommodation. For example, this could be a two, three or four bedroomed house. In some circumstances we will consider the incentive payment for tenants occupying three bedroomed maisonettes.

Those tenants who qualify for the incentive scheme as outlined above will need to be transferring into smaller accommodation, for example a one bedroomed flat or bungalow designated for older people. For this purpose tenants will require a degree of support from our housing support worker or a scheme manager.

Why move and what are the benefits?

There are reasons and benefits to move to a smaller property including:

  • your circumstances may have changed from when you first moved into your current property,
  • you may wish to move to more suitable accommodation for your needs,
  • you could save money on heating and lighting bills,
  • you may save time and money on maintaining your garden,
  • you could reduce time and money spent on redecoration and re-carpeting and
  • accommodation on one level can easily be maintained.

For further details on the scheme, please contact the Housing Section using the details in the panel on the left.
