Tenant involvement

This page contains information about how tenants and leaseholders can have a say in the way the Council manages their homes.

We want to give our tenants and leaseholders a real opportunity to have a say about the services we provide as a landlord. Our aim is to improve what we do by listening to you. Listed below are the various ways that you can get involved and have your say.

Tenants' panel

Our Tenants' Panel aims to represent and promote tenant involvement, and to make sure that this is central to the delivery of all housing services. If you are a tenant or leaseholder of Oadby and Wigston and you are interested in building and improving your neighbourhood by working in partnership with Housing Services, you could be just who the Tenants' Panel need! The panel are looking for a range of people of all ages and walks of life to join them in supporting Housing Services to maintain a top quality service. Join us to share your ideas and aspirations. The group usually meet approximately every 6 weeks on a Tuesday morning for a couple of hours to discuss current housing issues. However we are looking to be more flexible with our meeting dates and times to suit the Tenants' Panel availability.

Remember this is your borough, your future!

Residents' associations

A residents' association is a group of people who join together to get more involved in looking at local issues that affect them and their homes. The group can meet on an informal or formal basis as often as they wish. The group can decide on an agreed constitution and have elected members. Funding may also be available to help set up your group. If you are interested in your local community issues and want to make a difference, setting up a Residents' Association could be for you. It doesn't matter if you are currently living in a council flat, house or sheltered accommodation.

Tenants' sounding board

Have your say about council housing - without leaving home!

It is quick and easy ...

  • To join the Tenants' Sounding Board, you will need to contact the Housing Section. You will find the details below.
  • From time to time, we will contact you for your comments and ideas.
  • We might ask what you think about one of our services (for example, ordering a repair). We might also ask you about something that we are looking to change and whether you think it is a good idea or not.
  • You can choose how to be contacted - this could be by phone, email or in writing.
  • You can join or leave the Tenants' Sounding Board at any time.

There is no need to attend meetings or take up loads of your time - just give us some feedback about council housing in Oadby and Wigston. Help us to improve the services we provide to you.

Sheltered housing residents' meetings

We have 3 sheltered housing schemes, which generally provide accommodation for people aged over the statutory retirement age. At each of these schemes, we hold a meeting approximately twice a year to give residents the opportunity to speak on issues about their homes and our services, and to be consulted on new ideas. These groups have the opportunity and assistance to become a formal residents association if they wish to do so.

Public meetings

Public meetings are arranged to discuss a certain topic or an issue affecting a specific area, such as a proposed environmental improvement scheme. These meetings are normally open to all residents who have an interest in or will be affected by the proposals and they provide an opportunity to share information with a wide range of people. These are often one-off events to share information and obtain views about a particular issue.

Surveys

Surveys help us to gain information about a range of issues by asking a series of structured questions in face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews or through a postal questionnaire. We are required to carry out a comprehensive tenant satisfaction survey of all our tenants every three years.

Repairs and maintenance working group

This is a new group due to start shortly. You can be involved in looking at the housing service targets and performance and have a say in how you feel this service could benefit from changes to help it improve. The group will meet every 2 to 3 months.

Voids inspector

In this voluntary role, you can be involved in the way you feel properties should be re-let to other tenants by visiting void properties with a maintenance officer. Training will be given and you will be required to give feedback to the Housing Service.

If you are interested in any of the above exciting opportunities please contact the Resident Involvement Officer.
