Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27 January every year. This year Oadby and Wigston Borough Council will support this important day by holding a tribute on Monday 29 January to those who died with an event which will include a focus on “The Power of Words”.
All residents, from whatever background, are invited to come and remember those who lost their lives in World War II and reflect on how words can negatively impact and affect people’s lives.
The event will be opened by the Mayor, Councillor Samia Haq, and a presentation will be delivered by the Emeritus Professor, Aubrey Newman. There will also be words spoken by faith groups and non-faith groups and readings by young people who attend Oadby and Wigston educational establishments. All of which will reflect this year’s theme.
The event officially begins at 5.30pm but doors will be open at 5pm for refreshments and close at 7pm. Before closure there will be a lighting of candles to be placed at the base of a large steel Candle of Peace structure, for a moment of reflection.
The event will be held in the Council Chamber at The Council Offices, Station Road, Wigston, LE18 2DR.
