Oadby and Wigston youngsters are being asked to get creative and think green to help design a brand new refuse collection vehicle.
The competition is being launched by Oadby & Wigston Borough Council and is aimed at all primary school aged children. Local children who attend school within the Borough are being asked to draw a picture of what recycling means to them, with the winning drawing being placed loud and proud on the side of one of the new fleet of refuse collection vehicles.
The drawing could be anything to do with recycling - including what items can be recycled, what the benefits of recycling are or what recycling means to them as an individual. The competition is hoped to raise awareness around the importance of recycling and to get children involved in the subject at a young age.
On top of the winning drawing being placed on the vehicle side – the selected lorry will be named after the student. Three runners up will also have named plaques placed on new vehicles.
The vehicles with the winning design and plaques in place will start their working life from September. This will allow the winning design to become a permanent fixture collecting refuse and recycling around the streets of Oadby and Wigston.
The Mayor of Oadby and Wigston, Cllr David Carter, said: “In order to help us maintain the Borough as a green and safe place to live, the council have always worked closely with residents of all ages on a wide range of environmental issues.
“This competition continues that work; to get the message across to everyone of the importance of recycling. This will be a fun, enjoyable and rewarding competition to enter and a great way to harness the imagination of our younger population.
“I am looking forward to seeing all the entries and am certain that selecting a successful winner will be quite a task.”
The competition closes on 27 June with the winners being announced on 6 July.
