All hands on deck for the raising of the Merchant Navy flag

On Monday 3 September the Mayor of Oadby and Wigston hosted a flag raising ceremony at the council offices in honour of the Merchant Navy.

The event was attended by the Mayor, Mayoress, Deputy Lieutenant Resham Singh Sandhu, Councillors, staff, the Mayor’s Chaplin and members of the Royal Naval Association.

The flag was raised by Shipmate Pat Close in memory of his Father who was a Merchant Seamen and his brother who died during WW1 on a merchant ship.

Our Standard Bearer, Shipmate John Deeth an ex submariner stood at the side during the ceremony.

In his speech the Mayor paid tribute to the merchant seamen who served in the First and Second World Wars as well as later conflicts, and the Deputy Lieutenant said a few words of thanks and the importance of working together for world peace.

Light refreshments were served in the Council Chamber after the event which gave everyone the opportunity to catch up and share experiences.
