Mayor visits one of Oadby and Wigston’s best kept secrets

Tucked away, hidden amongst the chimney pots and winding streets in the middle of a typical estate in Wigston lies Nova Laboratories Ltd. Not a household name, but this is a Borough-based company that leads the way and punches well above its weight in providing products and services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.

Mayor of Oadby and Wigston, Cllr David Carter and the Mayoress were invited to visit Nova Laboratories premises to learn more about the company, and discover the future plans of one of the leading global innovators that is based right here in the heart of our Borough.

The Mayor’s tour (Thursday, 25 October) was conducted by Nova’s Simon Phillips, Head of Sterile Manufacturing and Roger Staniforth, Head of Group Finance, who gave an informative account of the company’s history, the broad range of products and services that Nova offer to an increasingly global market and their exciting plans for future growth.

Nova Laboratories will celebrate 25 years in business on 1 April 2019. They started out with just 24 employees and they have now grown to be one of the larger employers in Oadby and Wigston, with 232 employees – all based at their Wigston premises.

An impressed Mayor and Mayoress discovered that Nova Laboratories are the world-leaders in developing stabilising techniques for medicines, are renowned manufacturers of niche medicines, offer a vast range of products and services, as well as developing new pharmaceutical technologies.

This dedication to innovation and looking to the future is one of the reasons Nova are currently investing in building a new extension to their current operation that will become the home for the world’s first production scale Aseptic Spray Drying facility.

Mayor of Oadby and Wigston, Cllr David Carter, who has a biochemistry degree and completed a placement year in a pharmaceutical company, said: “It was fascinating listening to the work Nova Laboratories do right here on our doorstep. They make and help develop game-changing medicines and procedures that make a vital difference in the treatment of a wide range of medical disorders, benefiting thousands of families in the UK and around the world."
