Fake council tax refund email warning

We are asking all residents to be aware of a new council tax scam which is targeting people by email claiming they are owed a refund, in an attempt to get them to hand over their bank details.

The emails ask recipients to follow a link and fill in their details, but takes them to a website run by the scammers who can then use the personal information to steal money.

The emails are signed from a fake name - Andrew Walsh, Head of Communication Services - but the signature image shows that the email is from "Alison Walsh".

All councils across the country are warning residents not to be fooled by the phishing scams.

Please note that Oadby & Wigston Borough Council would not ask customers to provide bank details in this way by clicking on a link.

If you are in any doubt about the authenticity of an email which appears to have come from the Council, please call us on 0116 288 8961.
