Oadby & Wigston residents warned about new cold calling council tax scam

We are asking residents to be aware of a scam that has occurred in other parts of the country, so may occur here.

The scam involves a phone call from a company called ‘claimers’ who say they are calling on behalf of the Council and ask you for £150 to lower your Council Tax banding.

If you do receive a similar call do not disclose any of your details and terminate the call. You can let us know if you do receive these calls.

Residents should be aware that

  • The Council will not phone you about Council Tax band appeals.
  • Council tax banding appeals are free but can only be made in limited circumstances.
  • Council Tax bands are set by the Valuation Office not the Council.
  • Appeals must be made to the Valuation Office https://www.gov.uk/challenge-council-tax-band or by calling 03000 501 501.

If you are struggling to pay your Council Tax bill and need help, speak to our Council Tax Team on 0116 288 8961 (option) 3 who will be able to offer help and advice.

If you wish to report anything, you can do so here: https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/
