Statement from Councillor John Boyce, Leader of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council
"I am incredibly proud of how our borough, residents and businesses have responded to the localised lockdown. It has not been easy for anyone. We continue to show the resolve and determination that has got us to this point.
As you will already know the Borough of Oadby and Wigston has been removed from the ‘lockdown zone’. I am delighted with this news. Clearly the extended lockdown has been tough and residents and businesses have understandably felt frustrated.
We can take pride that we have adhered to the guidance, followed the testing protocol and have driven down the rates of infection in the borough. The response of residents has been incredible and the testing rate in the borough has been 12 times higher than the rest of the UK.
Unfortunately, rates in the borough are still too high as the national average of 7.8 per 100,000 people. As I said earlier in this Pandemic this virus does not respect boundaries and will continue to take advantage of any lapses in our behaviour. It is crucial we therefore follow what guidance is given from Public Health and adhere to any changes in regime that may occur going forward.
If you have recently received a leaflet or text from your GP please get tested. If you show symptoms or have been with someone who is showing symptoms please get tested. If you are shielding or vulnerable then you can order a home test. You can do this by calling 119 or going on the NHS website www.nhs.uk.
We will make as much information available as quickly as possible, as it is released to the Council. Please refer to our website and social media platforms which are kept up to date regularly.
Thank you for your continued efforts.
Councillor John Boyce
Leader of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council"
