Five things every employer can do to help stop the spread

A message shared from Mike Sandys, Director of Public Health for Leicestershire

As Director of Public Health for Leicestershire I am writing to you to thank you for your efforts so far as an employer in tackling coronavirus.
Nationally, we are experiencing an increase in cases of Covid-19. It is important as we approach winter months that we do everything we can to drive down the number of positive cases and protect the people that live and work in Leicestershire.

With the colder weather, people are more likely to begin to gather inside, and more so for public celebration of seasonal occasions. As a result, I’d like to remind you of some things we can do to stay safe.

This will allow us to continue enjoying being back at the places we love to visit, doing the things we love, and with the people we love.

I wanted to highlight five things you can do to make sure that your workforce – and customers – are protecting each other and their community:

  1. 1 in 3 people don’t have any coronavirus symptoms, so it is important that we regularly test for the virus. It is recommended that we test twice a week and record our results with the NHS. If you or your staff test positive, they should self-isolate. This helps stop the virus spreading. Remember, even if you’re vaccinated, there’s still a chance you can pass Covid-19 on, so you should keep getting tested regularly. Search “home test kit” for information on how to get tests delivered to your door.
  2. Encourage your staff to continue walking or cycling to work, as we leave the warmer weather behind us. Sustrans have some great tips about winter cycling on their website. If staff car share or take the bus, they can take precautions that are outlined in this government guidance.
  3. Whilst wearing a face covering is no longer mandatory, it is government recommended that they continue to be worn in crowded spaces particularly indoors. By wearing a face covering you and your staff will reduce the spread of droplets and aerosols carrying the virus by limiting the amount of the virus being released when you talk and breathe. This helps to protect others.
  4. Regularly wiping down surfaces can help to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Particular attention should be paid to areas that are touched often, such as tables, doors and serving areas. During seasonal occasions you may be decorating your premise, and it is important that they are not missed in the cleaning process.
  5. Staff should be encouraged to regularly wash their hands with soap and water and if possible, you can help ease the spread by continuing to offer hand sanitiser to customers.

Please also familiarise with the government guidance, for when you or your staff may be required to self-isolate.

As a local business, you can continue to play your part in stopping the virus from spreading by asking yourself if you are doing those five things. It is in our own hands locally to keep ourselves and our loved ones, staff and customers safe.

You can access support and advice from your local environmental health team via your district council and from Leicestershire County Council’s Trading Standards officers. My team (Public Health Improvement team) can also be contacted by email at , if you have any specific questions.

Thank you for everything you do to keep your staff and customers safe – it is much appreciated.
