Celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in Oadby & Wigston with family-friendly trails

Published: Thursday, 12 May 2022

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacon Trail has arrived in South Wigston, Wigston and Oadby offering a fun and free activity for the whole family to get involved in and learn more about The Queen’s 70-year reign.

Guided by Sir Barnaby Beacon as he travels around the three town centres, participants will be able to visit seven memorable and magical friends, like Charlie Crown or Theadora Throne, from Buckingham Palace.

Oadby & Wigston Borough Council has organised the jubilee trail, with seven businesses in each centre having signed up to being a stop on the journey.

Participants will see characters burst to life in augmented reality and be able to take selfies and record videos with them, as well as learn facts about each of the seven decades of The Queen’s reign. The characters are also part of an interactive story which participants can choose the outcome of as they go along.

Each participating business has a sticker in the window which shows its number on the trail and a QR code to scan. Players should visit the seven shops in numerical order and will need a smartphone to be able to scan the codes and view the characters.

The trail is completely free to participate in, but players can choose to make a donation to Help for Heroes.

Mayor of Oadby & Wigston, Councillor Rosemarie Adams, said “We’re delighted that all three town centres are hosting these trails and hope that residents and visitors enjoy getting involved and learning more about Her Majesty’s reign.

“As well as providing a fun and free activity for families, we hope people will be encouraged to visit our towns and explore their local high street.

“The trail is up and running now and will continue over the half-term and bank holiday period which provides an excellent opportunity for families to have a day out in town, with local businesses also being able to benefit from this increased footfall.”

You can take part in the trail now, and it will remain in place until Sunday 12 June. For more information and to see the trail maps, visit www.highstreetsafari.com/platinumjubilee
