Food and Heating Help

Help with money is available from the government's Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). If you are short of money because of a new benefit claim then please ask the DWP for a Short Term Benefit Advance (or a Universal Credit Advance if you are claiming Universal Credit). The rules are lengthy and you should seek help from an advice agency if you have any problems.

Help with food may be available from one of the foodbanks in the borough. These are as follow

Monday 12.30 - 1.30pm, fortnightly, South Wigston Congregational Church on Blaby Road

Friday 11.30am - 12.30pm, fortnightly, Trinity Methodist Church, Oadby

Both food banks ask for a donation (50p suggested).

The Borough Council has received limited funding via Leicestershire County Council and working with partners offers a food parcel in an emergency. To qualify you must be normally resident in the borough*, not received help previously under this scheme and not have any food. Applications are made online here - please enter 'nil' if you have no children living with you.

Help with heating in an emergency may also be available if you have a standard card or key operated pre-payment meter and the emergency credit has expired (or is about to expire) and you have not previously received help under this scheme, applications are made online here - please enter 'nil' if you have no children living with you.

  • If you are rough sleeping or living in hostel or supported accommodation you will not be eligible for this scheme, alternative arrangements have been made through Housing Options please call 257 2662.

By applying for these services you are consenting to your details being shared with partner agencies including the Citizen's Advice Bureau who may contact you with a view to providing additional advice.
