Why are we having wheeled bins when we have just moved to clear bags?
Whilst the move from clear bags to wheeled bins is earlier than anticipated, it is a necessity for the Council. We want our borough to recycle as much as possible to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill and minimise the litter that can be result from the use of bags. We also want to reduce the amount of plastic the Council uses.
When will I get my recycling bin?
Your recycling bin will be delivered between 18 June and 13 July 2018.
I already have a green wheeled bin for garden waste, what colour will my wheeled bin for recycling be?
The recycling bins will be green with a brown lid. The garden waste bins are green with a green lid so they will be easy to tell apart.
What size wheeled bin will I have for recycling?
We will deliver a 240 litre bin to every household. We want to encourage residents in the borough to recycle as much of their waste as possible to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
What can I do if I cannot accommodate a 240 litre bin on my property?
If you cannot accommodate a 240 litre bin at your property please let us know and we will consider changing this for a 140 litre bin. To get your bin swapped you will need to let us have your request by 13 June 2018. You can request a smaller bin by contacting our Customer Service Team on 0116 288 8961 or by calling in to our Customer Service Centre at 40 Bell St, Wigston LE18 1AD or by completing our online form: https://www.oadby-wigston.gov.uk/pages/smaller_bin
What are the dimensions of the 140 litre and 240 litre bins?
240 litre bin – Height 107cm; Width 58cm; Depth 73cm
140 litre bin – Height 105cm; Width 48cm; Depth 55cm
I do a lot of recycling; can I have additional recycling bins?
You can buy additional recycling bins for £17 regardless of the size of bin (140 litre or 240 litre). The Council has purchased a number of bins in bulk to help keep bin costs as low as possible. The payment for additional bins covers the cost of buying and delivering the bin including any associated administrative costs in doing so.
What if I cannot store a bin on my property at all?
If you think you cannot accommodate a bin on your property at all please contact our Customer Service Team on 0116 288 8961. We will arrange for someone from our waste team to carry out an assessment of your property.
I currently get assistance from the Council to put out my bin bags. Is there help available to to put out my recycling bin?
The Council will continue to provide an assisted collection for residents who are elderly or have a disability which means they are not able to move their bin kerbside and there is no-one else in the household who could move the bin for them. If you currently have an assisted collection this will continue for your recycling waste collection. If you would like to apply for an assisted collection please complete our online form:https://www.oadby-wigston.gov.uk/pages/recycling_rubbish_and_waste or contact our Customer Service Team on 0116 288 8961.
I have got used to putting all my recycling in one bag, how will the move to wheeled bins affect this?
You can put all your recyclable items straight into your wheeled bins, there is no sorting you to do.
Will my recycling still be collected weekly?
Yes, we have not made any changes to your existing collection arrangements. We will continue to collect your recycling weekly on your usual collection day.
Can I continue taking glass jars and bottles to the bottle banks?
The bottle banks across the borough will be removed within the next 3 months. All glass jars and bottles should be put in your recycling bin.
When can I start putting my recycling in my wheeled bin for collection?
As soon as your wheeled bin is delivered you can start using it and put it out on your next collection day.
When should I put my bin out for collection?
Recycling wheeled bins must be presented kerbside by 7am on your collection day. Bins should be removed from the kerbside as soon as possible after collection but no later than 10pm on the day of collection.
What should I do with any clear recycling bags I have left over once my wheeled bin has been delivered?
If you have any clear bags left after your wheeled bin has been delivered (full or partial rolls), please leave them next to your recycling bin when you put it out for collection and our crews will collect them.
