Noise at work

This page provides information about the health and safety risks to employees from noise at work.

Exposure to loud noise can cause permanent hearing damage.

Approximately 170,000 people in the UK suffer deafness, tinnitus or other ear conditions as a result of exposure to excessive noise at work.

Loud noise can also mask warning signals such as alarm bells and contribute towards work related stress.

Assessing the risks

To identify the noise related risks in your business, ask the following questions:

  • Are any of your workers exposed to loud noise?
  • Does the noise make it more difficult for workers to communicate with each other?
  • And is the nature of the noise contributing to work related stress in your organisation?

If the answer to one or more of these questions is yes, you need to investigate further and introduce measures to control the exposure to noise to acceptable levels.
