Smoke Free Public Places and Work Places

This page tells you about the law requiring almost all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and work places to be smoke free.

It came into force on 1st July 2007.

The smoke free law also applies to public transport and work vehicles used by more than one person.

No smoking signs have to be displayed in all smoke free premises and vehicles.

Staff smoking rooms and indoor smoking areas are no longer allowed.

Since 1st July 2007, it has been a criminal offence not to comply with the smoke free law. There are fixed penalty notice fines or larger fines imposed by the courts for anyone who fails to comply with the smoke free law.
