Christmas Capers 2007

With the glow of coloured lights and a frosty twinkle in the air we know the festive season has begun and Christmas Capers is coming to South Wigston supported by Oadby & Wigston Borough Council.  The wintry weather was not enough to deter the cheerful crowds from getting into the Christmas spirit and having a great time.

This year there was an assortment of stalls and attractions such as the Glice rink at the Bassett Centre which was very busy throughout the event, Billy Bates Fair and Santa’s Grotto. The heat was on for competitors in The Great South Wigston Treasure Hunt with an array of great prizes including a television and tickets for the Tour of Walkers Stadium as organised by the South Wigston Traders Association who also set up an amazing Santas grotto in the Heating and Bathroom Studio.

Local resident  J. Gibbons has enjoyed Christmas Capers for the last three years and says

It is just for the children really at the end of the day. I let them  go on the fair and my wife likes the chestnut stall. It is better Santa being inside though because the year before he was outside and it was freezing.

Another highlight was the Battle of the Bands which sees young local bands competing against each other in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Howard Colledge from the Next Generation Youth Bus which was based on Blaby Road Park considers Christmas Capers to be very beneficial for young people

It is a good thing, because it gives them something to do. It is a good family entertainment day so quite positive.
